Ezzouhour shared garden — AADL Boumati housing estate, El-Harrach, Algiers

Algeria's first shared garden, opened in 2012. It turned an interstitial patch left inside a collective housing estate into plots for the residents, and it was designed from the start to keep an ornamental look — vegetables and fruit trees interplanted with herbs and flowers so the garden would not read as a break in the cityscape.

Residents of the estate take on a single plot through an application process. CNFE provides the internal rules and the training, and lends each plot under a one-year exploitation contract renewable for up to four years. A municipal green-space technician acts as the link between residents and the authorities.

A public pilot led by CNFE, the national environmental training body, with the AADL housing agency and the local authority providing the site and administrative support. Residents form an association that handles day-to-day upkeep, and harvests go to each plot-holder's household.

Reported as a workable method of gestion urbaine de proximité — neighbourhood-level urban management through resident participation — credited with strengthening attachment to the estate and improving the living environment, and serving as the precedent for shared gardens elsewhere around Algiers.
