How much does it cost?

There is no fixed 'going rate'. Cost stacks up from (1) land, (2) soil and containers, (3) water, (4) waterproofing/structure for rooftops, and (5) labour — and varies hugely with scale and operating model.

Across the cases, the biggest lever for keeping costs down is how you hold the land. Among cases that record tenure, most borrow rather than buy — free loans, short leases or permits. Starting small with DIY planters and raised beds drives the initial investment right down.

How much space do I need?

It depends on your goal. The 120 cases that record area span 3 m² to 5,298,900 m², with a median around 5,000 m². Yet 14% are 500 m² or under — plenty start from a balcony, a corner of a rooftop or a few planters.

To simply get going, a few square metres of planters is enough. For a community garden with rentable plots, think hundreds of m²; for an experience farm or a fuller business, 1,000 m²+ is a rough mark.

What equipment is needed?

The minimum is soil, water, sun, growing containers and tools. From there you add a place for people to gather, plus cycling kit like compost.

What you need shifts with the type of site. Rooftops in particular carry technical prerequisites the ground does not: load capacity, waterproofing, drainage and wind.

  • Common: soil/media, containers (planters, raised beds), a tap and watering/irrigation, basic tools, a shed, benches and shade
  • Rooftop: confirm load capacity, protect the waterproof layer, drainage/irrigation routes, lightweight media, wind protection
  • Vacant lot: check the soil (bring in topsoil if needed), secure water, fencing/signage, safe circulation

Can it really be done?
