Overview
One of Kansai's largest rooftop farms, opened in 2011 on the roof of the Bears commercial building in Kadoma, Osaka. With about 900 square meters and 100 plots themed on food education, it turned an urban rooftop into a place for community farming and exchange.
Citizen participation
A 100-plot rental garden on a commercial-building rooftop that beginners can use for about 4,300 yen a month. A cultivation adviser answers questions, support staff tend the garden every Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday and basic tools are provided, with food-education events held through the seasons.
Operating model
A membership rooftop garden created by a commercial-building owner who, in a park-poor area, sought to 'make a park-like space on the roof', laying about 90 tonnes of soil at 50 cm depth, and sustained by plot fees plus diversified income such as barbecues.
Impact
Brought rooftop greenery and a community space to a park-poor area, and is cited by the Urban Agricultural Land Use Support Center as a pioneering rooftop farm with load-bearing design and diversified management.
