Huerto Orgánico Lak'a Uta (Cotahuma, La Paz, Bolivia)

A resident-run urban garden in the Cotahuma district of La Paz, described as the first of its kind in Bolivia. Forty families have grown organic produce on a steep site at 3,600 m. The garden is both a source of food and a place of learning: it has an ecological trail and is used to teach food security. Fundación Alternativas, which runs it, uses the site as the base for public courses in urban agriculture. Bolivian entries in this database have so far centred on the solar greenhouses (carpas solares) of El Alto; this is a shared garden under quite different conditions, on a high-altitude slope.
