Policy in Senegal City of Dakar micro-gardening programme (micro-jardins) Municipal · Dakar, Senegal · 2006
An urban agriculture programme launched by the City of Dakar in May 2006, born out of decentralised cooperation between Dakar and Milan, with FAO and the Italian NGO ACRA as strategic partners; Ndeye Ndack Pouye Mbodj coordinates it for the city. The technique is soil-less growing on cultivation tables built from recycled pallets and filled with a substrate of groundnut shells and rice husks. At the time of the C40 case study the city had 12 training and demonstration centres (CFD) and 24 trained instructors (18 women, 6 men), with 9,694 beneficiaries recorded (17% women, 83% men). By the time Senegal's state news agency APS reported on 6 May 2025, the city's training programme had been suspended: a week of micro-gardening training that cost 1,000 FCFA under the municipal scheme now costs at least 15,000 FCFA, and women's economic interest groups (GIE) run the courses on their own. The sources do not say whether the programme has been formally ended or only paused, so the status is recorded as unknown.
