DAPP Urban Garden Farming project (Lusaka, Zambia)

An urban garden project launched in January 2026 in Zambia's capital. Working through existing community groups in the densely populated, flood- and drought-exposed sub-districts of Kanyama, Chawama and Matero, it sets up demonstration gardens and delivers training in climate-resilient growing. The project runs to January 2027, with scale-up envisaged if it works.

Rather than convening new groups, the project builds on community groups that already exist — women's groups, youth groups, churches, schools and savings groups — to establish demonstration gardens. Those gardens double as learning sites and nurseries, and trained "champions" go on sharing the techniques with others.

Run as an NGO project delivering training in climate-smart urban farming techniques, aimed at household food security, nutrition, income generation and environmental sustainability through the productive use of underutilised urban spaces.

Zambia had no entry at all in this database until now. More than half of Lusaka's residents are reported to grow some of their own food, while flooding and drought badly disrupt production. Delivering training through women's, youth and savings groups that already exist — rather than starting by building an organisation — is a transferable design for urban-farming support. The project has only just begun, and no participation figures have been published yet.
