Future Crops

Poeldijk, Netherlands · Operator: Future Crops Cooperative U.A.

Overview

An Israeli-Dutch vertical farmer; raised $30M with backing from Tencent but was declared bankrupt in January 2023.

Citizen participation

Company-run mass production; no public participation.

Operating model

Commercial model growing herbs and greens at a Westland facility, supplying Dutch retailer Albert Heijn under white label.

Impact

Scaled back most production in Q4 2022 due to soaring energy costs, then collapsed; rising power prices made EU vertical farms unable to compete with conventional growers. Lesson: power-dependent indoor farming is highly vulnerable to energy-price shocks.

Crops

  • herbs
  • leafy greens

Scale

Declared bankrupt on 24 January 2023; all equipment sold via online auction in April 2023
