KCCA Urban Farming Programme / Kyanja Agricultural Resource Centre

An urban farming programme run by Kampala Capital City Authority, anchored by the roughly 30-acre Kyanja Agricultural Resource Centre in Kawempe division, supporting food security and incomes for vulnerable residents.

Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) trains vulnerable residents — single women, unemployed youth, the elderly and people living with HIV/AIDS — in urban farming using small-space methods such as sack and tower gardens. Residents grow vegetables, mushrooms and poultry at home and on vacant land.

A public programme run by the city's agriculture directorate, providing beneficiaries with advisory, technical, input and monetary support, with training at the Kyanja demonstration centre.

Since the 2011 fiscal year, more than 18,000 beneficiaries have been supported with inputs and extension services. Sack and tower gardens have enabled residents with little land to grow food in the city.

A municipally run programme; demonstrations are on the city-owned Kyanja centre, while residents practise at home and on vacant land.
