Overview
Yekaterinburg's first community garden, opened in 2021 in Mayakovsky Central Park by converting an old greenhouse once used to grow the park's flowers. Residents rent beds free of charge and grow plants year-round.
Citizen participation
Anyone can apply free of charge via the park's website and, once registered, enter the greenhouse using a QR code or phone number to grow vegetables, herbs and flowers year-round. Starter kits (small rake, spade, gloves, seeds) are provided. Tending the bed at least once a week is required; long-abandoned beds pass to the next person on the waiting list.
Operating model
Run by the municipal Mayakovsky park (TsPKiO). Built by reusing an old greenhouse — keeping its frames, iron structure and heating. Bed use is entirely free and starter kits of tools and seeds are provided free, as a public service.
Impact
An unusual fully-free, year-round model opening gardening to city dwellers without land. It drew enough demand to create a waiting list and gained attention as Yekaterinburg's first public community garden.
