Overview
A household-garden rebuilding effort begun by the Salvation Army after the January 2022 tsunami washed away the gardens and topsoil of Patangata, described as one of the lowest-income communities on Tongatapu. Residents fence their own ground and restart vegetable growing in the topsoil that is delivered to them.
Citizen participation
Residents prepare a fenced area themselves, the Salvation Army brings in topsoil to fill it, and the household then maintains the garden on its own.
Operating model
Funded by donations to the Tonga emergency relief fund. What is handed out is topsoil, vegetable plants and tools — a trowel and a hoe — rather than built structures.
Impact
No figures on results have been published. The design has households restore their own pre-disaster food source, with recovery from the disaster as the aim.

Each household gardens on land around its own home; the land arrangement is not published.
