Plenty

South San Francisco, United States · Operator: Plenty Unlimited Inc.

Overview

A Silicon Valley flagship of vertical farming that raised nearly $1B from SoftBank and others; filed Chapter 11 in March 2025, closed facilities and narrowed to premium strawberries.

Citizen participation

Company-run mass production; no public participation.

Operating model

Commercial model mass-producing greens, later strawberries, in highly automated indoor vertical farms for retail.

Impact

Despite huge fundraising it could not raise fresh funds and filed with $100–500M in liabilities, restructuring and shedding many leafy-greens operations. Lesson: the size of the capital raised does not fix vertical farming's chronic loss-making economics.
