Soil Born Farms — American River Ranch (Rancho Cordova, California)

Rancho Cordova, California, United States · Operator: Soil Born Farms Urban Agriculture and Education Project(非営利)

Overview

A nonprofit farming about 55 acres of county-owned land inside the American River Parkway at Rancho Cordova, near Sacramento, as an organic farm and food-and-environment education centre. It marked 25 years in 2025. Alongside growing, it restores riparian habitat, and the site includes classrooms, a certified kitchen, a native plant nursery and an outdoor classroom.

Citizen participation

Runs about 140 classes a year — school field trips, summer day camp and after-school programmes for children, plus cooking, herbal-medicine and growing classes for adults. Its "Growing Together" school-garden programme supports under-resourced schools with teacher training, standards-aligned curriculum and organic plant starts, and a Teen Empowerment programme offers paid work experience.

Operating model

The nonprofit leases the county-owned site from Sacramento County. Organic produce goes to the farm stand and into school lunches in the Sacramento City Unified School District, alongside donations, grants and class fees.

Impact

Hosts about 140 classes a year and brings thousands of students to the farm annually for hands-on learning about farming, nutrition and the environment. Produce from the 5-acre vegetable field goes into Sacramento City Unified School District lunches, and a model school garden on site shows districts how to build their own.
