Stadtgarten Connewitz, Leipzig

A 4,300 m² garden in the middle of Leipzig's Connewitz district. The environmental NGO Ökolöwe opened it in 1994 and has run it as a community garden since 2017. More than 25 residents grow vegetables, fruit, mushrooms and herbs together, and the site doubles as a demonstration garden open to the public, with interpretive panels and nature modules and a year-round programme of free courses on balcony planting, wild herbs and a seed library.

The site became a Gemeinschaftsgarten in 2017; more than 25 residents now meet regularly to grow and process vegetables, fruit, mushrooms and herbs together. From April to October it is open to anyone Tuesday to Friday, 1–6pm, with a gardening advice hour with a specialist at 3pm on Thursdays.

A model and demonstration garden run by the environmental NGO Ökolöwe. Entry is free and many of its courses and workshops are free too; the garden also hosts placements under the federal voluntary ecological service (ÖBFD).

The operators describe a garden that, after 30 years, also works as habitat for a range of species, as a playground and as a cooling corridor in hot summers. Harvest volumes and visitor numbers are not published.

The NGO has used the same site for 30 years, but the land title and the form of the agreement could not be verified.
