VICCO community vegetable farm, Viwandani informal settlement (Nairobi, Kenya)

Nairobi (Viwandani, Sinai), Kenya · Operator: Viwandani Comprehensive Community Organization (VICCO)

Overview

In the Sinai area of Nairobi's Viwandani informal settlement, the resident youth group VICCO farms a small plot on the bank of the Ngong River. What began as a tiny riverside vegetable patch became a regularly producing garden over about two years with support from the HealthyFoodAfrica project. It is one of 21 community-organised groups mentored by APHRC.

Citizen participation

A youth group of 23 members in Sinai farms the plot together, and opens it to neighbours for hands-on mentoring and free produce.

Operating model

Technical support comes from the HealthyFoodAfrica Food System Lab for Nairobi, run by the African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC). The harvest feeds members and neighbours.

Impact

Vegetables now reach members and nearby households, and the plot has become a place where neighbours learn to grow. Visits and advice have prompted households to start their own kitchen gardens.
