Urban Farm DB summary

Using in-depth interviews and participant observation in rural, peri-urban, and urban community gardens in the North of the Netherlands, this research examined the conditions and processes through which resourcefulness—a community's capacity to engage with its local resource base—facilitates social innovation. Comparing differing contexts, it identified five enablers for altering social relations and community empowerment: clear goals and motivations, diversity in garden resources, experimental knowledge processes, strong internal support and recognition, and place-based practices.
