Environmental justice in the shadow of the hyperobject

This chapter uses a narrative and visual retelling of a "failed" community-based environmental action project to explore how posthuman understandings might reorder how environmental justice materializes with and for children. It examines how an arts organization, a children's theater group, a community activist group, a historical preservation nonprofit, and a city council aligned around two sites — a very old house and an abandoned urban lot turned community garden. Drawing on Morton's concept of the hyperobject, the author examines unseen and unnamable more-than-human forces that continued to exert agency after human narratives "won" or "lost."
