An article that uses vignettes and photographs drawn from ethnographic research to reframe the methodological assumptions underlying school garden research. Applying Actor Network Theory and Social Semiotics to previous empirical school garden research, it develops a deeper understanding of the teaching and learning of ecoliteracy in these material contexts and highlights the affordances of school garden spaces. It also makes public the conversations of a small research group discussing a perceived ethnographic turn toward materiality, aesthetics, and agency.
