Potential for urban agriculture to support accessible and impactful undergraduate biology education

Reviewing major U.S. undergraduate biology programs, reports on campus garden use, and case studies from five higher-education institutions, this paper assessed how much urban agriculture is incorporated into undergraduate biology education. It found that while field experiences are fairly common in biology programs, community engagement opportunities are rare and urban agriculture is almost absent from course descriptions, and that although many U.S. institutions have campus gardens, evidence indicates they are rarely used in biology courses.
