Prospects of use of ecosystem services for estimation of scenarios of urban development

Literature on ecosystem services in the context of land-use change driven by urbanization is reviewed, and a methodology for assessing soil characteristics from an ecosystem-services perspective is proposed, illustrated with the example of the village of Ryzhovo in TiNAO, Moscow. Principles are set out for choosing sites for urban agriculture facilities based on preserving and improving soil characteristics, applying general ecosystem-service assessment methods both citywide and to land proposed for urban farming development.
