Urban allotment gardens in the eighteenth century: the case of Sheffield

This paper argues that Sheffield was the first town to experience workers' gardens en masse in the late eighteenth century, with many acres of horticultural land used as allotment gardens. While other provincial town histories of the period, except Birmingham, make little mention of similar phenomena, a cautious calculation suggests 1500-1800 allotments were available for rent in Sheffield in the 1780s.
