A review of historical and contemporary literature on the U.S. community garden movement, combined with surveys of participants in three distinctive community gardens, compares today's movement with its predecessors. It concludes that a greater diversity of gardeners and gardening motivations, combined with changing views on urban land use, will make community gardens a more lasting feature of city neighborhoods.
