Moritz Schreber (1808–1861) was a German medical doctor and university lecturer born in Leipzig, who became director of the Leipzig Heilanstalt in 1844 and wrote about children's health and the social effects of urbanization. The eponymous 'Schreber movement' arose only after his death; the first Schrebergarten was established in 1864 by Leipzig school principal Ernst Innozenz Hauschild, who leased land for children's physical exercise.
