Andernach – The Edible City

A unique German city-led project that replaced ornamental flowerbeds with edible crops in public space, free for citizens to harvest. Spanning ~8,000 sqm in the city center plus 13 ha in the suburbs, it is internationally known as multifunctional productive green infrastructure delivering food supply, biodiversity, social cohesion and education at once.

Under the motto 'picking allowed,' citizens jointly plant, tend and harvest in public space. School gardens at primary schools teach children and youth about sustainability, permaculture and healthy diets. The scheme employs long-term unemployed people to do the work, embedding social inclusion.

A city-led public campaign that converted ornamental-planting budgets to edible planting. All crops are organic, and the model couples maintenance with employment support via a social enterprise, linking upkeep costs to social benefit through a public-welfare partnership.

Continuously developed since 2010 and a flagship of the EU-funded Edible Cities Network (2018–2023), sharing lessons with Montevideo, Rotterdam, Guangzhou, Havana and Oslo. It has become a global model reconciling food security, biodiversity and social inclusion as urban infrastructure.
