Overview
A project installing greenhouses on the rooftops of refugee and vulnerable households in Amman's Marka and Wehdat districts. Seventy-nine new greenhouses were completed in 2025, reaching 78 households and one preschool community garden. Families receive tools, seeds and training in garden management so the plots keep producing. Researchers at the University of Petra note the approach depends on lightweight planting materials, proper waterproofing and efficient irrigation.
Citizen participation
Greenhouses are installed on participating families' own rooftops, with farming tools and seeds provided. By March 2025, the start of the growing season, every participating family had begun cultivating. Twenty-four greenhouses from the earlier phase also received full maintenance along with new tools and seeds.
Operating model
A development programme run by the international NGO Anera, funded through the Abdul Aziz Al Ghurair Fund's Youth Entrepreneurial Pathways for Resilience project. Produce is mainly for the household, with some families selling surplus vegetables.
Impact
One participant describes the rooftop plot as both a source of food and a mental relief. It cuts household food costs, and surplus can be sold for income. In dense urban neighbourhoods, the value lies in giving households with no access to ground-level land a place to grow.
