Overview
Baicaoyuan ('herbal garden') is a roughly 200 m² resident-run garden in the central square of a Yangpu neighbourhood. Supported by Clover Nature School, it is a representative resident-managed community garden.
Citizen participation
Over 20 resident volunteers plant cucumbers, pumpkins, aubergines, peppers and other vegetables each spring and hold activities that draw neighbours young and old. They learn permaculture skills together — composting, rainwater harvesting and protecting butterflies and other pollinators.
Operating model
Non-profit model: Clover Nature School supported the launch and resident volunteers handle day-to-day management, complemented by local/government support and workshop activities.
Impact
Helped establish a culture of residents actively managing small urban green spaces, becoming a venue for intergenerational exchange and environmental education, and is cited as a model resident-led community garden in Shanghai.
Land tenure
Public green space within the residential compound, used and managed by resident volunteers as a garden under the neighbourhood committee's permission.
