Overview
A publicly accessible farm on the Yarra River close to central Melbourne, opened in 1979. It keeps a wide range of animals — cows, goats, sheep, horses, ducks, pigs, chickens, geese, peacocks and guinea pigs — most of them rare breeds, including Nubian goats. The land was cultivated for Murnong by Indigenous peoples and has been farmed since 1838. It exists so that city children can encounter animals and farm work, and it also provides vegetable plots.
Citizen participation
It runs community programmes in horticulture, animal husbandry and land care at minimal cost, alongside a volunteer programme, school tours and holiday programmes. Space is set aside for community gardens (a 2021 safety assessment led to redevelopment plans approved in November 2024). Its NDIS programmes were paused in mid-2024.
Operating model
A not-for-profit organisation. The Victorian Government bought the land in 1974, and management passed from Collingwood Council to a Committee of Management in the 1990s. It is funded by government support since the 1980s together with entry fees and donations.
Impact
The state government bought the land in 1974 and the farm has operated within the built-up city for more than 45 years since opening in 1979, giving urban children and residents routine contact with livestock and farm work through school tours, holiday programmes and volunteering.
