Overview
In the San Juan Bosco II neighbourhood of San Marcos, in the San Salvador metropolitan area, residents cleared a vacant lot that had become a dumping ground and turned it into a shared urban garden. The Cosechando Sonrisas programme supplies three months of training and inputs free of charge, and more than 50 households now grow vegetables on their own plots.
Citizen participation
Participants join a three-month technical training course and receive seeds, seedlings, fertiliser and pest-control inputs free of charge, plus an individual plot. They learn hands-on methods for small spaces such as raised beds and vertical growing. Participants range from children to people in their seventies.
Operating model
A publicly and charitably supported programme in which training and inputs are free. The harvest is mainly for household consumption, with surpluses sold locally.
Impact
Organisers report that participating households save roughly US$25 a week on food. More than 200 people completed the training in the year reported, and about 60% of them have kept growing, either for their own table or for local sale.

Sporta pils dārzi (Gardens of the Sports Palace, Riga)

A citizens' initiative that in 2020 turned a privately owned vacant lot — left derelict after the demolition of a Soviet-era sports palace/ice arena — into a garden held under temporary use. It opened to the public in spring 2021 and combines 150 planting-box plots with wildflower meadow and picnic/rest zones. It doubles as a venue for cultural and educational events and draws over 4,000 visitors a summer.
