Overview

Responding to an ageing society, the city's Social Affairs Bureau established this senior citizen farm in the Xincaoya settlement. Elders grow vegetables organically, reconnecting with nature to maintain body and mind and deepen social interaction-a welfare-oriented urban farm.

Citizen participation

Residents of Kaohsiung aged 65+ who are willing and able to farm apply (a lottery is held if oversubscribed). They grow eco-friendly vegetables with organic methods, with monthly food-and-farming and health lectures.

Operating model

An elderly-welfare program of the city's Social Affairs Bureau. The city provides the land and entrusts operation to the Community University Promotion Association and a food-and-farming education center; use is granted for one year at a time.

Impact

Providing 41 plots for up to 64 elders, it slows ageing, supports health and wellness, and-through intergenerational (grandparent-grandchild) co-learning events-promotes seniors' social participation and community exchange.

Land tenure

License / permit

Elders cultivate city-owned land under a one-year-at-a-time use license; operation is entrusted to civic organisations.
