coton Nakasemba

Osaka, Japan · Operator: 辰野株式会社

Overview

An approximately 153-square-meter urban community garden opened beside Kuho Park in Osaka's Semba district in March 2025. Its name draws on 'coton' (cotton) and 'co + on', evoking Semba's textile-industry heritage and a wish for soft, cotton-like human connections.

Citizen participation

In the heart of the Semba business district, children and adults take part together in everyday care such as watering and weeding. Harvest festivals and seasonal planting events create year-round opportunities to connect people with nature and with each other.

Operating model

An urban community garden created and run by Tatsuno Corporation, a real-estate and building company, using its own land to add greenery and vitality to the area and to build relationships with building users and local residents.

Impact

Offers a model of opening corporate-owned land as a community garden, providing one of the few patches of green relief in central Osaka, and has been featured by the Kinki Regional Agricultural Administration Office as an example of a downtown community garden.
