Yokohama Citizen Farms & Harvest-Experience Farms (Yokohama Midori-Up Plan)

Yokohama, Japan · Operator: 横浜市(環境創造局/みどりアップ推進)

Overview

Under its Midori-Up Plan, Yokohama develops citizen farms and harvest-experience farms and, since 2014, runs the 'Yokohama Farm Expedition' agri-tour. It officially expands opportunities for residents to engage with farming while conserving farmland that remains in the large city.

Citizen participation

Residents rent plots at nearby citizen farms to till the soil and grow fresh vegetables, and enjoy picking strawberries and fruit at harvest-experience farms. The 'Yokohama Farm Expedition' agri-tour takes them around production sites and distribution facilities to experience the city's diverse farming.

Operating model

A public initiative under the Yokohama Midori-Up Plan through which the city advances farmland conservation and residents' contact with farming, leading the development/operation of citizen and harvest-experience farms and farm-experience tours.

Impact

Conserves farmland in the major city of Yokohama through the Midori-Up Plan and, via citizen farms, harvest experiences and farm tours, promotes understanding of agriculture, local food and green conservation.
