Overview
An agroforestry project on Priest Peak, one of the hills above Port Louis, where planting began in March 2021. Four hundred endemic plants and fruit trees have gone into one hectare, bringing greenery and edible trees back to the hillside behind the city. Rather than a vegetable garden, it is an urban woodland-plus-fruit-trees space maintained with residents.
Citizen participation
The site is run on the idea that neighbours should treat it as an extension of their own garden, and several residents are already involved in day-to-day maintenance. Keeping up the wellness trail is part of the work.
Operating model
The land is granted by the Ministry of Environment. The British High Commission funded the work (linked to COP26) and the Australian Embassy supported plant procurement through the Petit Verger Prison nursery, with FORENA implementing.
Impact
The project sets three goals: reconnecting the neighbourhood with its natural surroundings, keeping the health trail in use, and establishing a self-sustaining ecosystem. Securing water and getting young trees established remain the standing challenges.
