Overview
Launched on 28 March 2025 at Grantley Adams Memorial School, this Barbadian school-garden project has students at three secondary schools grow their own food in low-cost self-watering wick beds made from five-gallon buckets, framed as a single lesson on food insecurity, nutrition and climate change.
Citizen participation
Over six weeks students design, install and maintain their own wick beds, running the watering schedule, monitoring plant growth and personalising the buckets with climate messages.
Operating model
Publicly and internationally funded: the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Nutritional Security, PAHO and the EU/CARIFORUM 'Strengthening Climate Resilient Health Systems in the Caribbean' project support it, with follow-up visits after six months.
Impact
It is aligned with CARICOM's '25 by 2030' goal of cutting food imports and aims to draw young people into agriculture, embedding the gardens in school life with a six-month follow-up to check they last.
