Hirano Coop Farm

Kobe, Japan · Operator: EAT LOCAL KOBE / 神戸市(食べられる公園 実証実験)

Overview

A park-based community garden opened in April 2021 in a corner of Hirano Outlook Park in Kobe's Hyogo Ward. Growing citrus such as yuzu, figs and plums, its community plaza, garden and membership learning plaza create a place to engage with farming in the city.

Citizen participation

A garden set in a freely accessible park; in the membership-based 'learning plaza' members hold their own plots. Activity days are on alternate Saturday and Wednesday afternoons, with a farmer present twice a month to give hands-on guidance plot by plot, as members mingle with park visitors and local residents around farming.

Operating model

Run as part of Kobe City's 'edible park' demonstration project with the involvement of the EAT LOCAL KOBE local-food platform, combining a membership-based learning plaza with a community plaza and garden open to all.

Impact

Opened a public park as an 'edible park', creating a permanent place where residents grow fruit trees and vegetables while socializing, and serving as one hub of EAT LOCAL KOBE's Gastropolis Kobe initiative.
