Overview

A residents' garden in Vilnius's Pilaitė district. It began with six raised beds and now has 33, maintained by community members. The city backed its expansion through community-activity support, and the same initiator is preparing a new garden with eight raised beds at Verkiai.

Citizen participation

Residents each look after a bed. All beds were shared at first, but as the initiator put it, "this concept was not very acceptable, everyone wanted a separate bed", so the layout moved to individual beds.

Operating model

The city selected the initiative from 15 competing proposals for community-activity support and funded its expansion.

Impact

Demand has outstripped the number of beds — "there were more people who wanted to garden than we had space for" — and the model is spreading to other districts.
