Overview

A residents' garden next to the Beepart creative workshop on Vydūno Street in the Pilaitė district of western Vilnius. Started by the architect Laura Petruškevičiūtė, it has grown from six beds to 33. The number of urban gardens in Vilnius is rising quickly, and gardening is increasingly treated as one of the city's urban-development tools.

Citizen participation

The beds were all shared at first, but that concept did not take: "everyone wanted a separate bed", and the garden moved to individual beds. The beds are tended by neighbourhood residents themselves, alongside the activities of the adjacent Beepart creative workshop.

Operating model

A resident-led garden initiated by an architect and carried by the neighbouring creative workshop and local residents. Vilnius runs a municipal competition supporting NGO community activity; another new garden in the city — eight raised beds at the former stables of Verkiai manor — was chosen from 15 proposals and built under that scheme.

Impact

Lithuania had no entry at all in this database until now. The garden's shift from fully shared beds to individual ones — because the shared version was not accepted by the people using it — is a concrete data point on how much collectivity a design can carry. It also connects to the city's stated aim of rebuilding a sense of community in its Soviet-era housing districts.
