Overview
A Fukuoka-based citizen group that has researched and spread the 'cardboard-box compost' method—decomposing kitchen waste using only microbes—for over two decades, turning household food scraps into compost within the neighborhood to build a 2-km-radius nutrient cycle.
Citizen participation
Residents compost their own kitchen scraps at home in a cardboard box with bulking material, then share and use the finished compost via workshops and community gardens.
Operating model
Run as an NPO through workshops, compost-kit sales, and municipal/corporate diffusion programs; the spin-off Local Food Cycling Inc. commercialized an urban bag-type composter.
Impact
Became a nationwide model for cardboard-box composting, cutting incineration and CO2 from food waste while building community, and seeded the urban-composting venture Local Food Cycling.
