Overview
A community garden opened on 8 June 2021 in the courtyard of Kraków's city hall. The eleventh community garden in the city, it is unusual for sitting in the centre of town inside a government building's courtyard. It was set up with support from the European RU:RBAN programme, with residents and council staff planting vegetables and herbs together.
Citizen participation
The garden is made jointly by residents and council staff; at the opening ceremony participants planted vegetables and herbs. The city describes it as open to all residents, and deputy mayor Jerzy Muzyk said the space, created together by residents and officials, should be welcoming to everyone.
Operating model
A municipal project supported by the European city-to-city programme RU:RBAN, through which Kraków is credited with drawing up Poland's first set of rules for community gardens.
Impact
An instance of a government building's courtyard being opened to residents. Through its participation in RU:RBAN, of which this garden is part, Kraków is credited with producing Poland's first community-garden regulations. No quantitative results such as yields have been published.
