Overview
A 30-acre urban farm on public land in southeast Calgary, formerly a construction site. Run by the settlement agency CCIS, it teaches newcomers to Canada how to grow food in southern Alberta's climate. Guided by Blackfoot Elder Herman Many Guns, its programming acknowledges the site as Treaty 7 territory. Soil restoration, biodiversity, composting, honey production and pollinator stewardship are central.
Citizen participation
Over 200 newcomers and their families come to the land to grow food, learn together and gather around their own food cultures. Programming includes cultural teachings, ceremonies, sharing circles and land-based learning led by Indigenous Elders and community leaders, plus a farming apprenticeship for people aged 18–30.
Operating model
A not-for-profit urban farm run by the settlement agency CCIS on public land, sustained by donations and grants; increased funding paid for a permanent Indigenous programming role.
Impact
Beyond food security, the farm gives newcomers a place to see parallels between Indigenous ways of relating to land and their own ancestral practices. Settlement support and reconciliation happen on the same ground — what makes it distinctive among urban farms.
