Overview
A project in Madhyapur Thimi Municipality, Kathmandu Valley, that used rooftop farming to address food security, waste, water conservation and climate change at once. Its distinctive feature is treating urban agriculture less as a source of produce than as a way to cycle water and organic matter within the household.
Citizen participation
A rooftop-farming project run jointly by UN-Habitat, the Environment and Public Health Organization (ENPHO) and Madhyapur Thimi Municipality. Covering wards 1–3, it built residents' skills through repeated training and used demonstration sites to show new techniques and spread them further.
Operating model
A public project delivered by the municipality and an NGO, funded by grassroots donations from groups and individuals in Japan channelled through UN-Habitat's Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific. It combines rooftop growing with rainwater harvesting, greywater recycling and household-level organic waste management.
Impact
It raised residents' rooftop-growing skills and spread the techniques to a wider population through demonstration and knowledge sharing, standing as an early example in urban Nepal of a municipality, an NGO and an international agency together giving rooftop farming institutional backing.
