Newham City Farm
London (Beckton), United Kingdom · Operator: London Borough of Newham (Newham Council)
Overview
One of London's oldest city farms, run by Newham Council. In 2022 its closure was decided as part of the borough's austerity budget (a further £7.6M of cuts).
Citizen participation
A free council-run city farm where families and schools met animals and took part in environmental education.
Operating model
A publicly-run facility directly operated and funded by Newham Council.
Impact
Council budget cuts ended the public funding and the farm closed in 2022 with no community consultation, criticised as axing a ~£250k shortfall despite large reserves.
