Garden on Karpovka (Ogorod na Karpovke)

Saint Petersburg, Russia · Operator: Сообщество «Огород на Карповке» (Garden on Karpovka community)

Overview

A resident-led urban gardening community on the Karpovka River embankment on St Petersburg's Apothecary Island. It links the island's 18th-century history of medicinal-herb gardens with contemporary urban gardening practice.

Citizen participation

Any city resident can join the gardening community, learn to plant seedlings, take part in on-site master classes and activities, and connect with other participants online. It is a bottom-up resident community that plants and tends the garden collectively.

Operating model

Founded as a resident-led pop-up garden in the public space of the Karpovka River embankment, redeveloped in summer 2019. Operated by volunteers and the local community as a non-commercial initiative centred on workshops and social events.

Impact

Turned a newly built embankment public space into a community hub, providing an entry point for city residents to engage with plants. It is cited within Russia as a model for creating an urban gardening community in the city.
