Pop Up Patch

Melbourne, Australia · Operator: The Little Veggie Patch Co

Overview

One of Melbourne's largest community gardens, on a downtown car-park rooftop with 140+ plots.

Citizen participation

Residents, restaurants and businesses leased 140+ planter crates at A$25/week and used the harvest.

Operating model

A membership pay-per-plot business on a car-park roof under a short-term licence, dependent on renewal.

Impact

In 2016 the licence for Federation Square's upper car park expired and was opened to new expressions of interest; the operator's site now lists it as closed. Lesson: rooftop tenant-farming depends on renewable short-term licences.
