Overview

A citizen project keeping bees on Ginza rooftops to make urban green networks visible. Linked to rooftop gardens and local food culture, it helped spark urban beekeeping across Japan.

Citizen participation

Citizen volunteers help with honey harvesting and rooftop gardening, while local restaurants and confectioners co-develop products using the honey.

Operating model

Funded through honey sales, collaborative products with local businesses, membership and donations, and rooftop-greening and food-education outreach.

Impact

Became a model that spread urban beekeeping nationally and abroad, and a symbol of rooftop greening, biodiversity and local collaboration.
