Overview
The first public community garden in Lviv, western Ukraine, opened in 2018. Since the war began it has become a place where displaced people grow vegetables together, with the harvest turned into free meals for IDPs via a city bistro. UNDP Ukraine features it as one of the local initiatives sustaining food security during the war.
Citizen participation
A public garden run by NGO Plato where residents grow vegetables together. After the full-scale invasion, internally displaced people who fled to Lviv became its main participants: over 400 took part in planting and tending in a single year. Participants reported that the gardening work itself helped them psychologically.
Operating model
Produce from the garden goes to chef Yevhen Klopotenko's bistro 'Inshi', which turns it into 20 portions of 'social Menu #2' served free of charge to internally displaced people — linking the garden's production directly to a welfare meal service.
Impact
Over 400 internally displaced people took part in growing during the year covered, and the harvest became 20 portions of a free IDP menu at the bistro 'Inshi'. Participants reported that working the soil offered psychological support during displacement.
