Schaduf — Greening Cairo's Rooftops

A community rooftop-farming initiative led by the social enterprise Schaduf that turns unused rooftops in Cairo's informal neighbourhoods into productive gardens. Working with GIZ and civil society, it pursues food production, microclimate improvement and social inclusion and income for women and youth. Though it uses low-tech water beds, participation and self-reliance of low-income households are at its core.

In Cairo's informal settlement of Ezbet el-Nasr, low-income households grow vegetables on their own rooftops. Launched in 2014 as a community initiative, residents—especially women and youth—do the growing and harvesting and gain technical training and entrepreneurial skills, with the social enterprise Schaduf providing micro-loans and market access.

A social-enterprise model. Participating households receive repayable micro-loans from Schaduf and repay them through crop sales (usually within a year). Schaduf acts as market guarantor and installs low-cost water beds made from local materials.

Documented benefits include improved air quality and lower local temperatures, sustainable food production, social integration of women and youth, and technical and entrepreneurial skill-building.

Participating households use their own rooftops; the equipment is held by residents through micro-loans.
