Overview
The Sendai Furusato-no-Mori project is a collaborative effort to rebuild eastern coastal Sendai's seaside forest, lost to the tsunami, with citizens' own hands. After planting that began in 2011 it has raised some 27,000 seedlings, shifting since 2021 to tree-nurturing and coastal nature learning.
Citizen participation
A citizen-led effort to regenerate the seaside forest of eastern coastal Sendai lost to the 2011 tsunami. Under a liaison council of residents, citizen groups, and companies, it holds tree-planting and tree-nurturing festivals, seedling-raising, recreation using the coast, and environmental and disaster-prevention learning for schools.
Operating model
A collaboration between Sendai City and citizens, NPOs, and companies, run on volunteer participation plus corporate sponsorship and public support; it won the Green Infrastructure Grand Prize / Minister of Land, Infrastructure award.
Impact
By regenerating the coastal forest with citizen participation, it restores disaster-prevention woodland and biodiversity, winning the Green Infrastructure Grand Prize, and serves as a place of learning that carries on the memory of the disaster.
