Oba Sorayama District Regeneration (Matsue)

A project in Matsue's Oba/Sorayama district where the NPO Machizukuri Network Shimane and Shimane Prefecture jointly regenerate degraded farmland. Residents grow 'edible' fruiting trees and vegetables together, cutting CO2 and renewing local interest in farming and food while the restored land is used as citizen farms.

Local residents take part in farming experiences—growing fruit-bearing flowering trees and vegetables that are 'edible'—to regenerate degraded farmland. Residents help clear and cultivate the land, raising interest in and understanding of farming, and since 2010 the restored land has been leased to residents as citizen farms.

A partnership between the NPO Machizukuri Network Shimane and Shimane Prefecture. With national and prefectural subsidies, the NPO clears and restores abandoned farmland and leases it as citizen farms, aiming at CO2 reduction and renewed local interest in farming and food.

Reverses farmland abandonment and converts restored land into citizen farms, boosting resident interest in farming and food and reducing CO2 through participation.

Restored farmland is leased to residents as citizen farms; regeneration is an NPO-prefecture partnership.
