Ukrainian community allotment, South Swindon Parish Council (UK)

In Swindon, Wiltshire, South Swindon Parish Council has opened disused allotment plots as a community garden for Ukrainian refugee families; in August 2026 councillors themselves joined a work session. The council manages 584 plots across 14 sites (expanding to about 604) against a waiting list of more than 400 people, so converting idle plots to community use both cuts the queue and brings empty ground back into cultivation.

Worked mainly by Ukrainian families who came to the UK as refugees, with parish councillors (including Cllr Jake Chandler) joining the work sessions. Ten volunteers from UKRI's Arts and Humanities Research Council previously helped with maintenance. It is held as a shared plot rather than individual allotments.

A public arrangement in which the parish council opens up disused plots on the allotment sites it owns and manages for community use at little or no cost, funded from within its allotments budget.

UK allotments are normally one plot per person with a long queue; this inserts a shared-use slot into that system. It gets land quickly to people — refugees among them — who cannot realistically wait years for an individual tenancy. As the councillor put it, the point is "providing spaces like this for the community to use and bringing empty allotments back into use": the welfare provision and the idle-plot problem are addressed by the same measure.
