Overview
A half-acre community farm opened in 1992 by Abu Talib and neighbourhood residents on a city-owned vacant lot in Highbridge, the Bronx. Alongside vegetables it keeps bee colonies and chickens, producing roughly 10,000 pounds of food a year.
Citizen participation
Tended by volunteers from nearly 100 families. Founder Abu Talib, raised by a sharecropping family in South Carolina, turned an abandoned city-owned lot into a garden together with neighbours.
Operating model
Sells at local farmers markets and runs a "Grow to Give" programme donating surplus produce.
Impact
In 1998 the garden was assigned to the Parks Department, securing it as public green space. In a low-income neighbourhood it supplies fresh vegetables and supports local food access through its donation programme.
