Voedselpark Amsterdam (Lutkemeerpolder, Netherlands)
Amsterdam, Netherlands · Operator: Stichting Voedselpark Amsterdam(住民・農家・食のイニシアチブ・市民団体の協働から生まれた財団)
Overview
A citizens' initiative to develop an agro-ecological landscape park in the Lutkemeerpolder in Amsterdam Nieuw-West, near Schiphol, combining sustainable food production, nature development, education and recreation. It was established in 2022 after years of protest against plans for industrial development, and in May 2025 won the municipal tender to develop the 9.5-hectare parcel kavel N5; in July 2025 the municipality allocated 26 hectares in total to urban agriculture.
Citizen participation
From 2018, protest actions in the polder — land occupations and action camps — were led by Platform Behoud Lutkemeer and Extinction Rebellion against plans to develop the land for industry. The citizens' initiative itself was established in 2022, with a foundation formed out of a collaboration of residents, farmers, food initiatives and civil-society organisations.
Operating model
In May 2025 the initiative won the municipal tender for the development of the 9.5 hectares. The plan comprises organic cultivation, a market garden and a food forest, alongside walking paths, play areas, harvesting areas and food-and-drink facilities.
Impact
A case in which citizens reclaimed polder farmland slated for industrial use, first through protest and then by winning a municipal tender — a land-defence campaign that went all the way to securing the right to run the site.
Land tenure
Won the municipal tender for the 9.5 ha in May 2025; the exact contractual form is not stated in the source.
